Introducing: Renate Toews, Collections Assistant.

My name is Renate Toews, and I am one of the summer interns at the Daly House Museum for the summer of 2017. I am originally from Brandon, and I am currently finishing my degree as a Religion major and History minor at Brandon University. This is my first year interning at the museum, and as the collections assistant I will be cataloguing data and artifacts throughout the museum to improve the overall experience of the Daly House. As well as updating our database, I will be giving tours throughout the summer of the Daly House!

I am extremely excited to be a part of the Daly House Museum, and I hope to see you all through the museum this summer!

Introducing: Megan Maybroda, Heritage Interpreter.

My name is Megan Maybroda and I am one of the summer interns at the Daly House Museum. I am originally from Brandon, and I am currently studying a history major at the University of Manitoba. This is my first year at the museum, and I will be doing research for an upcoming exhibit for the Daly Birthday Party on August 16th, 2017. The party is celebrating the 165th Birthday of Thomas Daly and Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation. As well as the exhibit, I will be giving tours of the Daly House this summer. I am extremely excited for my summer at the Daly House, as local history fascinates me!

For the exhibit I am working on, I am exploring and researching the history behind Brandon’s very first law firm- started by Thomas M. Daly and George R. Coldwell, which is presently Meighen Haddad LLP. Through the years, the law firm has seen many partners and witnessed Brandon transform into what it is today.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Daly Birthday Party in August and through the museum this summer!

Introducing: Anna Lysack, Research Assistant for Spectacles Then and Now Exhibit

My name is Anna Lysack and I am one of the summer interns at the Daly House Museum. I am from Brandon and I currently study history at Canadian Mennonite University. This is my second year at the museum as last year I was the Collections Assistant. As Research Assistant, I will be spending the next few months organizing the Spectacles Then and Now exhibit which will open October 2017. The exhibit’s themes of sports and recreation have particular interest to me because I have long been involved in activities such as tennis, long distance running, and soccer.

I will be selecting 25 photos from a photographic collection taken by J.B. Whitehead around 1909. Each selected photo and the Whitehead family will be researched to provide background information to the photographic display. In partnership with Keywest Photo, the museum is running a online contest in which members of the public are invited to recreate the historic photographs. The best submissions will be displayed in the exhibit alongside their turn of the century counterparts. More information can be found on the Daly House Museum website and on our Facebook page.

I look forward to exploring the recreational history of Brandon and area, and I hope to see lots of your recreated photos!

This initiative is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between Brandon Area Community Foundation, the Government of Canada, Manitoba Sport, Culture and Heritage, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast.
