Yuly Rosas, Daly House Volunteer

Yuly or “Julie” came to Brandon from Colombia five years ago and is now, proudly, a Canadian Citizen.  Married with a seven-year-old son, Yuly is an archivist by profession.  Since her English is limited, Yuly decided to become involved in the community as a volunteer, both to contribute to the Brandon Community and to improve her English.  We are so glad she decided to volunteer!

In the last month, Yuly has been working on data entry, helping to catalogue items, and has just taken on a huge project – translating our tour guide into Spanish.  There are over 3,000 Spanish speakers in Brandon, and Yuly hopes the availability of the guide in Spanish will help them feel more comfortable at the Museum.

In addition to helping at Daly House, Yuly volunteers at the Elspeth Reid Family Resource Centre and at the daycare at Westman Immigrant Services.

“I love Brandon and I love Canada,” says Yuly.  “People are so polite in Canada, and in a quiet city like Brandon, I feel safe.”  To others thinking of becoming volunteers, Yuly has this advice:  “It’s a great experience – a way to improve skills and to learn about Brandon and its history.”
